Whoa, there! That’s not a nice thing to say, is it?

You’re right. Who am I to straight up tell someone that blogging full time is a bad choice for them when we’ve never even met?

Don’t get me wrong here. I LOVE blogging and I want other people to love it too! But it’s not all rainbows and cupcakes like so many people make it out to be.

Blogging isn’t going to work for everyone.

The truth is that some people just aren’t going to enjoy it, and there’s nothing wrong with that!

I think it’s important to highlight certain aspects of blogging that some people may not like for a couple of reasons:

  1. So you can have a heads up. That way, you won’t be so discouraged if you were to feel like the work isn’t right for you.
  2. So that you don’t throw your money into hosting, courses, themes, etc. when blogging ultimately may not be for you.

I might be completely wrong here. Maybe blogging full time IS the right thing for you! But this list can help those of you who aren’t so sure yet.

Here are some of the reasons why blogging may not be the best job for you…

1. You don’t like writing

This one is quite obvious, but it needs to be said. Writing is the main aspect of blogging. Your blog posts are what’s going to turn your blog into a business.

Generally speaking, posts that are at least 1,000 – 2,000+ words do best in the blogging world. If you don’t think that you can bring yourself to write high-quality blog posts often, then blogging may not be for you.

Now, there are ways to get around this. You can hire writers to write your blog posts for you. This can be helpful if you prefer to work on other aspects of blogging such as editing and formatting posts, adding images, promoting, etc. However, a beginner blogger may not have the money to constantly hire writers.

Even if you can afford all of the writers you need, I would highly recommend learning how to write your own blog posts so that you know how the industry you’re in works!

2. You can’t find the motivation

Blogging is a DIY business. You’re in charge of yourself, your blog and all of the work that you do. As a blogger, you are your own boss and you get to set your own schedule! This all sounds great, right? It’s one of the main reasons why blogging is so attractive as a business.

But if you can’t motivate yourself to do the work, you won’t get the results.

The truth is that some people just seem to work better when they have set deadlines, someone to hold them accountable and a paycheck to motivate them.

It’s possible to create this kind of atmosphere for yourself and your blog. You can set strict deadlines and hold yourself accountable by telling your readers that you will be posting weekly on a specific day(s). You can also tell a friend or family member about your goals and have them hold you accountable.

However, no one is forcing you to blog in the end. And if you’re a beginner who doesn’t have readers and/or isn’t making any money yet, it can be difficult to bring yourself to do so much work without getting rewarded.

3. You want to get rich quick

You’ve probably seen it before- Bloggers making 5 and sometimes even 6 figures PER MONTH! In fact, I have an entire blog post showcasing some of these high earning bloggers.

Seeing all these income reports with super high numbers can really get an aspiring blogger excited about the potential profit.

The trouble in this comes when beginner bloggers think that getting to such high numbers is going to be a piece of cake. All those high earning bloggers may look like they’re living the easy life, but they usually don’t show all the work that went behind getting to the point that they’re at!

If you want to succeed in blogging, you HAVE to be aware that it isn’t a get rich quick scheme! It takes time to write and publish your posts, gain traffic and increase your earnings.

Knowing that it’s going to take time and effort will help keep you from becoming discouraged and quitting before seeing success.

4. You don’t want to cater to your readers

Yes, blogging is your business and you get to write about whatever you want. But if you want to be successful, you have to give information to your readers that they will find valuable!

If you’re not willing to listen to what your readers want and write blog posts that are going to help them, then blogging full time might not be the right thing for you.

Of course, you can still write about yourself! You can still pick your topics and ultimately decide what you want to put on your blog.

But a blog that only screams “ME!” with information that isn’t very useful to the readers will probably not make it very far.

5. You don’t like working at a desk

Let’s face it; blogging is a pretty sedentary job. The bulk of blogging work is writing the blog posts and other tasks done on the computer.

Sure, there are some active things you can do. Going out to take photos for your blog, going to blogger events, etc. But the truth is that most of the work is best done sitting at a desk.

There is a benefit here though. You get the freedom to choose your desk!

Your home desk, your bed, a coffee shop, a foreign country, a beach, you name it! As long as you have a laptop and an internet connection; you’ve got a workspace.

6. It’s a lonely job

Blogging doesn’t come with coworkers. This is either a good or a bad thing depending on your preferences, haha!

Either way, blogging is an inherently lonely job.

It’s good for bloggers to network with fellow bloggers, but this is usually done over the internet rather than in person. However, you may be able to find local bloggers to meet up and work with.

If you want to get into full time blogging, you should be aware that it will probably take a bit more effort to build relationships with other bloggers than with coworkers that you see every day at a job.

7. You aren’t knowledgeable in your niche

As a blogger, it’s important to establish yourself as an expert in your niche. This will build the trust between you and your readers that will allow you to succeed.

You can’t just spit out a bunch of information, slap some ads and affiliate links onto your blog posts and expect to quit your day job!

So, back to what I said in the beginning. You have to establish yourself as an expert. That sounds a little intimidating, but don’t worry too much.

It’s absolutely important to have a good amount of knowledge in the topic that you’re going to be writing about, but you don’t necessarily have to be at the very top.

What’s important here is that you’re willing to continue learning and researching so you’re able to give your readers the information that they need.

You can establish yourself as an expert by sharing the knowledge that you have (or learn) in an honest and helpful way.
